The building, subject to demolition and reconstruction, was built in the early 1970s in the western part of the city of L’Aquila (AQ), on the Belvedere Hill. The intervention represents a balance between the obligations of regulatory compliance and the stringent constraints of the consolidated city context. The new forms of the project present a new, more regular structural mesh and a complete reinterpretation of the decorative apparatus. The building is of great landscape impact, due to its dominant position over the city, and in the main front it shows a design of organic architecture that allows a harmonious insertion in the profile of the hill.
The architectural system of the façade takes on a form of organic completion with a predominantly dark colouring (inspired by the natural tones of the earth, rock and vegetation that completely cover the building, helping to mitigate its volumetric impact on the city skyline almost camouflaging itself behind the Belvedere hill below.
The building is therefore proposed as a complete architectural form capable of consistently adding together the individual facade elements of the building (railings, flower boxes, sunshades, etc.). It thus takes on the “organic” character of a vegetal latticework that from the roots clinging to the rock (the travertine of the portico-base) branches out (vertical brown elements), puts leaves (green panels) and definitively wraps the roof of the building to open frayed towards the sky, as if to ideally continue the vegetal slope of the Belvedere hill on which the building was reborn after the 2009 earthquake.

Costruzione

The structure of the new building is by reinforced concrete frame. The foundation floor is also modified for static requirements. The roof is ventilated type with insulating elements. The exterior cladding is in stone, classic Travertino marble from Tivoli, with different cuts and shapes.

The system is proposed as a new complete architectural shape, capable of coherently summing up the individual elements of the building’s facade: railings, flower boxes, sunshades. It is made of the shape of a plant that from the roots clinging to the rock (represented by the Travertino marble of the porch-based) branching with vertical brown elements and puts the leaves (consisting of green panels).

Risparmio energetico

About energy characteristics, a centralized system of heat pumps supplies the residence’s heating machinery. The external window frames for all of the lodgings are in aluminium with double glazed and low emissive glasses. Architecturally integrated photovoltaic panels have been installed, hidden from view by the shaped profile of the roof.
