Casa Malaparte a Capri

Malaparte’s villa is one of the most reproduced and photographed buildings. The reasons are many: the beauty of the place where it was built (Punta del Massullo), the association with its client, the journalist and writer Curzio Malaparte, the reference to its designer and founder of MIAR (Italian Movement for Rational Architecture) Adalberto Libera, … But, perhaps, the main reason is that it is simple. A blunt parallelepiped.
And like all simple things, it has the great merit of allowing those who examine it, even superficially, to immediately grasp its positive elements but also its dissonances.
In relation to the latter, what we perceive immediately is that the much praised (in many texts and many advertising slogans about the building) integration into the natural landscape can not really be found. We can rely on all the possible lucubrations and sweetenings, but it is clear that the materials used and the colouring have no reference to the rocky spur that the building occupies, nor is a material rarefaction attempted or sought, as the artefact is positioned in full with its volume. Not even the shape, which is clearly geometrically rigid, can recall the association with the articulation of the natural element. Its landscape integration can therefore mainly be attributed to the fact that, over time, vegetation has grown around it.
As for the fact that it then recalls the “Capri style”, it is hard to understand on what basis, since it does not present elements neither of the elitist architecture as in Villa Lysis with its neo-Gothic-neoclassical-Liberty blend, nor of the “solitary” villas of Eng. Edwin Cerio or those with white telephones of the non-architect Carlo Angelo Talamona, nor of the institutional one typical of the rigour of the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, nor of the spontaneous popular architecture of Capri.
Wanting to go into further detail, it can be observed that it does not even correspond to any typical Libera style. His work in those years was in fact fundamentally based on the axiom of axial symmetry and the tension between the centre and the identical wings: Libera’s tendency to work on the counterpoint between the central axis of the form and its periphery, translating it into a dialectic between central full and lateral void or vice versa, is in fact a constant feature of his.
The constraint of the elongated form imposed by the site is fine, but one would have expected to find at least a rarefaction on the two long elevations with overhanging balconies or terraced retreats. Instead, nothing, just windows in various shapes, without hierarchy of voids except for the preeminence of the large windows on the fireplace hall, which are themselves devoid of dimensional correspondence between one prospect and another. This characteristic could be due to the intrusion of Malaparte in the execution of the project but, in reality, is also found in the original project.
In fact, it should be remembered in brief that the project had three phases:
Adalberto Libera drew up a project (first version) which was presented to the Municipality for the concession on 14/03/1938.
on 21/03/1938 is presented in the Municipality, in the meantime (to start the work immediately? … operation that recalls so much “modern procedures”), another project for the arrangement of the access road to the area and the excavation of a cistern for the collection of rainwater. The work on the cistern and then the building is entrusted to the Amitrano company.
On 26/03/1938 Libera carried out an inspection in which it became clear, in connection with the excavation for the cistern carried out, that it was possible to study with greater precision the attack on the ground of the building, which is appropriate a variant with enlargement of the building from the original 6,60 m wide to 9,50 m. This second version was designed by Libera towards the end of March 1938. From this moment on, however, relations between Libera and Malaparte seemed to be interrupted and the writer took over the project, transforming it into a work in progress directly with the contractor, bringing it to a conclusion (third version) and, in particular, from an original residential area of 273 square metres to a final area of 565 square metres.
On 30/05/1938 the Ministry and the Regional Superintendence expressed a favourable opinion on the project presented on 14/03 and on 12/09/1938 the Municipality issued the building permit (it would be useful to analyse the version that is currently present as formally authorised).
If we go to analyse the first version, it can be observed that Libera himself does not seem to consider his own compositional approach, drawing up a very simplified project with a plan that “banally” (in the writer’s opinion) recalls the shape of the “usual” littorio beam both in the plan (with the balcony overhanging on one side) and in the elevation.
In this first version Libera sets a “straight villa” with a 6.60 m wide and 28 m long body. In the project, drawn up even though, as we have said, with a trait and setting too “simple” for an Architect of Libera’s level, there is a functional coherence of the hierarchy of spaces, of the inter-storey communication, of the usability and of the research, by means of a facing stone cladding, of an integration of the ground connection with the typology of the site. Wanting to go deeper, the project in question provides that all primary functions are contained in the basement block. The hierarchy is marked by the intersection between the corridor and the stairs with a distribution cross that divides the sleeping area (located upstream) from the kitchen and services (at the head of the building). Upstairs is the entire living area with the living room and terrace in a position that is not understandably reversed with respect to the logical exposure of the open area to the sea and not in the opposite direction (and perhaps to seek greater protection from wind exposure).
Version two maintains the basic compositional line even if it expands into a building 9.50 m wide and 30 m long. Specifically, the corridor is brought towards the axis of the building, the kitchen and bathroom are moved from the header position and merged with the rooms in the upstream sleeping area. The studio, the two adjacent bedrooms and the two symmetrical bathrooms appear in their place, while the original configuration with terrace and living room remains on the upper floor.
The last version which is then the one actually realized is carried on and completed by Malaparte together with the Amitrano company. In fact, the configuration is that of version two on which the writer provides to saturate volumetrically the remaining open spaces, the transformation of the roof into a terrace, the creation of what will become the peculiar element of the building, namely the staircase, and with the changes related to the impossibility of executing in the original position the central sector and its consequent movement below it. Specifically, the terrace becomes the living room whose original position is replaced by two bedrooms with bathroom and head office, previously present on the ground floor, while the guest rooms and services remain on the lower level and is “recovered” a further underground portion.
The construction ended, in fact, in 1942 becoming what Malaparte would call the “House like me”.
When in 1979 Malaparte’s villa, according to a referendum called by a magazine, turned out to be the best work of modern Italian architecture, the historian of architecture Giovanni Klaus Koenig summarized this result perfectly: “…ironically (Libera) won with a work made with the left hand, for a friend and half with him”.
