Il particolato atmosferico è una miscela complessa di particelle differenti, costituisce l’inquinante che oggi è considerato di maggiore impatto nelle aree urbane, ed è composto da tutte quelle particelle solide e liquide disperse nell’atmosfera, con un diametro che va da pochi nanometri fino ai 500 µm e oltre (cioè da miliardesimi di metro a mezzo millimetro). Particolare attenzione viene posta alla frazione dimensionale PM10 a cui appartengono tutte le polveri con diametro aerodinamico inferiore a 10 micrometri ed al sottoinsieme della frazioni di polveri PM2.5 che include tutte quelle microparticelle respirabili che finiscono negli alveoli polmonari.

Atmospheric particulate matter is a complex mixture of different particles, it is the pollutant that today is considered to have the greatest impact in urban areas, and is composed of all those solid and liquid particles dispersed in the atmosphere, with a diameter ranging from a few nanometers up to 500 µm and more (ie from billionths of a meter to half a millimeter). Particular attention is paid to the PM10 dimensional fraction to which all dust with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 micrometers belongs and to the subset of the PM2.5 fraction of dust which includes all those breathable microparticles that end up in the alveoli of the lungs.
