Stefano Grattarola (13/08/1969) nasce e vive a Genova ed è un artista. E come tutti gli artisti si dedica a fare cose inutili.
Qualcuno la definisce “la nobile inutilità ovvero come giocare sul serio.” Perché sono le cose inutili che riescono a fermare l’istante e, più spesso, quello che non si vede. Quello che sta dietro le apparenze. E l’arte, quando è pura, è talmente inutile che è praticamente un obbligo che sia presente nel luogo dove si abita, con la stessa funzione fondamentale di un tavolo, di una sedia, di un letto, di una finestra sul mondo esterno dal proprio mondo interno. Dove si ritorna. Perché è solo attraverso il ritorno che si assimila la partenza e solo attraverso la ripetizione dell’esistere che realmente si modifica, si penetra, si scalfisce l’animo.

Questo è quello che esprime un oggetto come “The conscience box” dell’artista Grattarola. Un oggetto che non fa parte del design, che non ha alcuna funzione pratica tranne quella, assolutamente fondamentale, di essere presente e di essere vista. Una visione diretta, indiretta, da dietro, attenta o di sfuggita ma presente, costante e inevitabile. Ed attraverso la presenza, il messaggio che trasmette nella sua semplicità è, in realtà, estremamente complesso, ossia che dietro a qualsiasi forma umana, in fondo a qualsiasi apparenza, c’è sempre una coscienza ed è quella che dà l’unica vera forma del nostro esistere.

But only useless things can stop the moment and, more often, what you don’t see. What lies behind the appearances. And art, when it is pure, is so useless that it is practically an obligation that is present in the place where you live. Where you return. Because it is only through the return that one assimilates the departure and only through the repetition of existence that one really modifies, penetrates, scratches the soul.

This is what an object like “The conscience box” by the artist Grattarola expresses. An object that is not part of the design, that has no practical function except that, absolutely fundamental, to be present and to be seen. A direct, indirect, from behind, attentive or fleeting but present, constant and inevitable vision. And through presence, the message that it transmits in its simplicity is, actually, extremely complex: that behind any human form there is a consciousness and it is the one that gives the only true form of his/her existence.
